antoine + vice + (words)
it’s exiting when you meet someone so passionate about what they do..
that guy antoine.. can there be virtue without vice?
we first met about 2 months ago at ed’s house of slider @thepassagebar where i was getting ready to warm up with 2 hours of early evening deep stuff
it’s clear not only in ones personal presentation but in the way they physically and verbally represent ones self that they really love what they do

antoine’s this really nice guy that has acquired some really nice tracks and seems to have a really nice time piecing it all together to an intimate group or a larger audience around sydney. I guess it’s unique when you come across a simple and humble human that works hard to give every set as much as possible, especially when there are a) too many dj’s b) too many ego’s and c) not enough quality to back up a) + b) combined
antoine was really excited to share some words with us this week and so i’m really excited to share those words with you too..
how did you make yourself known in Sydney’s house movement?
Gah! This story is a little long so I’ll skip the beginning. I’m in my 5th year of DJing now. I started off getting serious about producing music back in 2010 under the Moonchild moniker. Back then it was all about French-Touch and Nu-disco. I was a resident at Candy’s Apartment and played a handful of gigs interstate alongside some dope locals like DCUP, Denzal Park and Peking Duk to name a few. After putting out some free originals and official remixes, I released an EP under the VAMP Music imprint with remixes from some big names at the time such as Russ Chimes and The Phantom’s Revenge. Eventually, I fell off the radar to reevaluate what I really wanted from this DJ/producer thing. A couple of months later I started listening to a lot of different music, a lot more House and Tech-House… stuff that I heard while I was road-tripping in Spain in 2011. When I got back, I met some london-lads, Aboutjack and Ben Ashton, who were starting a night in Sydney called Bad Apple. Things glued pretty well between us and so, early last year, my buddy Whitecat and I joined the ranks as Event coordinators and started throwing monthly parties with internationals such as Mosca, Huxley, Daniel Bortz and Soul Clap to name a few. That’s around the time I wanted to change my name. I felt it was time to move on from the “child” era and start over fresh. Thus was born Antoine Vice. I thought it would sound a bit more personal and intimate, since part of it is my real name. Around the end of 2012, Tim, Jack and myself started a different brand with our friend Spacejunk called Mantra Collective. It hasn’t even been a year yet and we’ve already accomplished more than we could have imagined… and that’s the story so far!

how do you feel about the Sydney scene?
In a way, you can tell where the scene is going by looking at Festival line-ups… and judging by this year’s Field Day line-up alone, i think the scene is moving forward in a positive way. Yes, House, Deep House and Techno are crossing over to the mainstream but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It just means that Sydney is finally catching on to what’s happening overseas. We’re getting a lot of different parties around town and lot’s of different crews are now standing on their own 2 feet and competing with the big guns like Chinese Laundry, Finely Tuned, Future Classic, Astral People, Picnic, Spice, Motorik and Sash. Not to mention some fresh producers who are releasing quality tunes and getting their names out there. I can only see good things ahead.
favourite venue to play?
I just played at The Spice Cellar over the week-end (corner of martin place and elizabeth street). After a year and a half of partying there, I can safely say it’s now also my favourite place to play tunes. At a close second, I have to give some love to my Wednesday home at The Passage (Victoria Street in Darlinghurst) where things tend to get pretty weird. And then of course The Abercrombie in Broadway. It’s a cute little venue - perfect for day parties. spice
what are you playing right now that’s got you excited?
OH GADDYUM! Well, I’ve got a bit of a UK vibe happening at the moment. So a lot of Huxley, Audiojack, Midland, Breach, Joy Orbison, Bicep, Detroit Swindle and one of my favourites at the moment Leon Vynehall. Seriously every EP this god-amongst-men has produced so far has made me feel like stripping nude and doing cartwheels. Brilliant.
are you planning on moving into producing anytime soon?
So far, I have only produced one track under the Antoine Vice moniker - a housey little remix for Pablo Calamari and DCUP. That was 7 or 8 months ago. I’ve been preparing a little EP for a while now but I have no release dates just yet… keeping it mysterious!

favourite sydney joint for food and what’s usually on the menu?
The Passage. Highly recommended… for anything. Y’all hungry? Go to the Passage. Y’all thirsty? Go to the Passage. Wanna get weird? Go to the Passage. It’s small and intimate, perfect for cute little dates. But also big enough to bring a crew and put yourself in a food coma. I also really like Felix, at the bottom of the Ivy. It’s like a little French bistro. Their deserts are ridiculously tasty!

where can the lovely people of this city expect to hear you next?
Sydney peeps need to head to Chinese Laundry this coming Saturday (15th) as us boys from Mantra Collective are hosting the Cave with our favourite Jesus lookalike, Lancelot headlining. On that note, on the 29th, I’ll also be playing alongside Lancelot at a secret location for his EP launch coming out on Nurvous.

when did you decide you wanted to play house?
I never did… I mean, it never crossed my mind that i would ever be a DJ until i moved to Sydney in 2008 and made friends with people who were DJs. It’s still odd. I mean sure, when I was in my teens I messed around mixing DNB with this program called PC DJ… just for fun. I guess it happened when i tried to mix some vinyl for the first time at a friend’s place. I don’t know if it’s something I’ll be doing my entire life but it’s something that I enjoy, a lot. I love music so it’s always something that I will be involved in down the road, of course. I should consider myself lucky/grateful to be able to do this!
who inspires you most to keep making sounds?
Too many artists inspire me to make sounds. I think it’s more important to know WHAT inspires someone to make music. To me, it’s not about making music to get more gigs, or making music for the money, fame, glory or “living the dream.” It’s more so for the satisfaction of knowing that I contributed to the world through my creativity and left an impact on the people that listened to the sounds i shared - whether it be legally or not. Damn. This probably sounds wanky… i should’ve just given a list of names hahaha but whatevz! x

occasionally you come across a little ray of sunshine that seems to stand out from the daily intake of musical talent that fills your soundcloud clipboard or inbox
getting around a few parties over the past couple of months i’ve had the opportunity+pleasure of not only being graced by the talent and wonderful sounds that morgan strategically pieces together but also getting to know this excellent human being on a more personal level
known well for providing consistency to a crowded spice cellar at the early hours of a sunday morning, morgan knows how to set the mood no matter where she is
playing a host of fun and incredible sydney spaces and events over the past few months (spice black, the passage, the abercrombie), morgan was nice enough to do a Q&A so we can fully appreciate what she’s up to in sydney at the moment
how did you get involved or known in sydney’s house movement?
I’m very much the new kid, being known is as easy as having Facebook. I guess my main thing has always been putting in the time — going to parties, checking out the vibe. Keeping it fresh music wise and staying nervous.
how do you feel about sydney’s scene at the moment?
I feel like its on its way up! We have talented locals, passionate promoters and a nice little dance troop.
favourite venue to play?
Obviously the Spice Cellar is pretty high up there for me, its my second home. I love the staff and the crowd are always up for it.
In terms of sound i am a pretty huge fan of the den at the Abercrombie. I love that booth.
what are you playing right now that’s got you excited?
If i told you it would be less exciting for everyone.
are you planning on moving into producing anytime soon?
That is the plan but i still have a lot to learn.
favourite sydney joint for food and what’s usually on the menu for
Morgan?
Im a functioning pho addict - so i would have to say Pho Pasteur on George St. They treat you like shit but the pho is so good.
where can the lovely people of this city expect to hear you next?
Im playing this Saturday from 2-4 at the Spice Cellar. It will be my last before i go to Europe!
when did you decide you wanted to play house?
I could speculate, but not even i know how i got here.
who inspires you most to keep making sounds?
the internet.
and dilla.
advice: take a moment to catch a set or two and get acquainted with the deep and curious sounds that morgan offers on a weekly basis
